It is the least known Brazilian cervid in the country. They are found in small areas of southwestern Sao Paulo and southern Brazil. There is not much information available on them because they are very hard to observe.

MAIN FEATURES

The brazilian dwarf brocket has simple, backward-facing antlers. It is the smallest deer in Brazil, weighing approximately 15kg and measuring an average of 45cm in height. Their coats are reddish, with a light brown belly and white tails.

TOP THREATS

Habitat destruction, sport hunting and predation by domestic dogs.

DIET
Flowers, leaves and fruit.
REPRODUCTION
There is no defined reproductive season. Gestation is approximately 7 months, with one baby born at a time.
BEHAVIOR

● Active nocturnally and in the twilight. They are solitary and occupy small areas. They mainly inhabit areas of dense vegetation, mainly the Mata das Araucarias.

TRIVIA

Its front legs are proportionally short, hance its popular name in Portuguese, “short-hand deer.”
