Its long, thin legs and reddish color make it unmistakable. The lower part of the head and the tip of the tail are white.

TOP THREATS

Deforestation and the reduction of its habitat makes the maned wolf have to leave the forests to feed and reproduce, being runover and hunted.

DIET
The main diet is fruit, birds, armadillos and rodents.
REPRODUCTION
Being a solitary animal, encounters only take place in the breeding season, between April and June. Usually three pups are born per litter and they stay in the burrows dug by mothers until they are seven weeks old.
BEHAVIOR

● It is a solitary animal, which shares territory in the mating period.
● It is shy and practically harmless animal, preferring to keep its distance from people.
● Communication between male and female is through marking and barking.
● The maned wolf hunts prey, digging holes and jumping to catch birds in flight.

TRIVIA

It prefers a plant known as "lobeira," from the same botanical family as tomatoes. Studies attribute medicinal properties to this plant, protecting the maned wolf from parasites that lodge in their kidneys.
